Created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone in 1982, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (TWoFM), was their first Fighting Fantasy Gamebook (sort of like a choose-your-own-adventure book). Players would have to battle their way up Firetop Mountain, fighting monsters and navigating dangerous situations, to face off against the infamous Warlock.
In a few weeks Tin Man Games will be bringing this title to life as a single-player tabletop adventure for iPhone and iPad. TWoFM will hit the the App Store on February 22 for $4.99 (USD).
Jess: The game looks like a cross between a digital game book and a board game. In TWoFM you get an interactive 3D map and over 100 miniatures that are based on the original gamebook’s illustrations. it looks fantastic.
The story uses old and new illustrations by Russ Nicholson, the original artist for the game. This will give players of the original game those warm fuzzy feelings of nostalgia while the newer 3D maps and minis will appeal to old and new gamers alike.
The fighting system uses simultaneous turn-based combat system. In other digital gamebook games I’ve played, you make decisions then wait see how they resolve. This often comes off feeling a little flat. TWoFM combat looks much more dynamic and exciting as you have the miniatures and animations playing out your battles.
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain looks like it is going to be a ton of fun. Keep an eye on Tin Man Games Feb 22nd for the game’s release.
