Roll For It! is a dice-chucking filler game designed by Chris Leder and published by Calliope Games (Thieves). First released in 2011, Roll For It! lets 2-4 players test their luck as they roll dice, trying to form the necessary sets in order to collect cards for their point value. However, players have to be a bit strategic as they roll, because different cards require different combinations of dice, and the riskier the roll, the more valuable the reward.
Andrew: Roll For It! is a truly straightforward game – the definition of a filler, really. It plays basically as quickly as you can roll dice (though it’s not real-time, to be clear), and it’s a great fit for the moments between heavier games or, honestly, between ordering food and getting it. Compact enough to go anywhere you can splay some cards and roll some dice, Roll For It! is just a great game to have on hand any time.
But Roll For It! isn’t thoughtless, either. Players don’t have to hard-roll the combos they seek all at once – you commit dice to matching cards as you roll them, hopefully completing combos over the course of turns. However, each time you commit, you have fewer and fewer dice for the subsequent turns, so chasing that 6-die combo is going to leave your reserves depleted, though it is worth a ton of points. Before any turn, players can recall all the dice they have committed, letting them start fresh, but losing any ground they may have made towards the bigger combos. It’s a push your luck mechanism that plays over the course of turns, rather than within each turn.
Andrew: This is a quick review because Roll For It! is a quick, uncomplicated, and simply fun little game. Chris Leder, as he told us in our interview at New York Toyfair 2015, wanted to make a game which would appeal to his non-gamer family and especially his wife, and he has absolutely succeeded here. Roll For It! is a great family game and filler, and as Chris himself points out in the video below, it’s also ideal for Irish pubs (or presumably whatever other kind of pub. Whatever, I’m not the boss of pubs).
Jess: If you’re looking for a light, fast, fun, (cheap) little game to throw in your backpack or purse, Roll For It! is definitely a game for you. It’s not a deep, strategic game, but it’ll keep you entertained over drinks or dinner, and we think it’s just awesome!
